Snow Day!

2012.12.14 Flagstaff Snow

This is the view that we woke up to this morning. If you saw my previous post today you may have guessed that we were at an observatory.  We’re visiting Flagstaff, Arizona and were fortunate enough to be here for their first snow of the winter! Yay!

Dec 14 Forecast

Windy. Snow this morning will give way to snow showers this afternoon. Temps nearly steady in the low to mid 30s. (Brrrr) Winds SW at 25 to 35 mph. Chance of snow 90%. Snow accumulating 1 to 3 inches. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.

As I sit here in front of the fireplace, I hear the snow plow humming down the street. A few fluffy snowflakes fall and every now and then the wind picks up and swirls everything around like shaking a snow globe.

I love snow! I grew up in Ohio and have so many fond memories of snow days when school was canceled and my siblings and I would go out to play all bundled up with so many layers of clothes that we could barely move. I remember building a huge igloo in the front yard, big enough to crawl in and going sledding on Cardboard Hill. There was a field at the edge of our neighborhood with 2 giant rectangles dug out of the dirt.  On freezing days the fire department would fill the depressions with water to create our very own skating rinks.  Someone would build a small fire next to the rink and we’d spend hours ice skating with just enough breaks to thaw out by the fire.

But there were also days when we stayed out in the cold and snow for mere minutes, and rushed back inside to warm up and strip off all those cold wet layers.  I’m sure we drove my mom crazy! That’s probably what motivated her to move to Arizona.

I will admit that we moved away before I started driving, so I don’t have memories of having to get to work on the icy roads. That probably makes my view a bit more romantic. Or maybe it’s the fact that Phoenix has a minuscule amount of seasonal change, so I yearn for any variety that I can get.

In any case, I’ll enjoy the view from our cozy little room and maybe venture out a bit later today…we’ll see. One thing though, we’re not prepared for getting the car ready to drive.  Oh wait, I think the kitchen here has a broom and a rubber spatula.  Hopefully that will do the trick.  Can you believe that my husband forgot to bring gloves?  This should be quite an adventure.
