11 DIYs That Make Great Gifts for Travelers

| November 9, 2012 | 1 Comment

Christmas is just 48 days away, which allows just enough time to pull together some unique and creative crafts for your favorite traveler. Take a look and let me know what you think and how your creation turns out.

 1. Choose Your Adventure Canvas Map

Choose Your Adventure Canvas

This cool project is so versatile.  You can choose a map of your own city or one that you’d like to visit and even come up with a different quote as well.  The idea comes to us from Better Homes and Gardens.  You can find the instructions at the link.  Project by Bethany Kohoutek, Do It Yourself editor

2. Fun and Easy Travel Themed Holiday Decor by Emily Henderson

Globe Snowmen

Here’s a link to a video on HGTV showing how to make snowmen from globes and a “Joy to the World” sign on a wall map. I love the idea of  the non-traditional colors for the holidays. It would work especially well in a retro or coastal themed home.

3. Maptastic Projects from Paper Crafts Connection

Maptastic Projects

The caption for this project says “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” I love that!  This link actually takes you to 4 different projects with instructions from the Paper Crafts Connection.

  • A big flower map from maps
  • The hoop decor pictured here
  • A trio of travel pictures in one frame
  • And a sweet “Happy Trails” card made from a map too.

4. Heart-shaped Framed Maps from Everything Fabulous

Heart shaped framed maps

Are you using your smart phone or GPS instead of paper maps these days? Then pull out all those maps from your hometown, places you’ve lived or favorite vacations spots and create a set of these heart-shaped framed maps for yourself or a friend.

5. Custom Books make Priceless Keepsakes

Maui Blurb Book Cover

The possibilities are endless on what you can do with a good quality custom made book and you can’t believe how easy they are!  Did you embark on a travel adventure with someone special in the last year or so?  Wouldn’t it be awesome to create a personal reminder of the trip that will last virtually forever?  The photo above is the cover of a 13″ x 11″ coffee table book that I created after a trip to Maui with friends.  And look at this list of books you can make for gifts through Blurb. Plus most everything is available in 7 different sizes AND either soft or hard cover to fit your budget:

  1. Blank or lined notebooks for daily journaling or to take on your next adventure
  2. Custom-filled travel journals with photos and memories after the trip
  3. 2013 calendar planners (order multiples of one design or customize for each of your friends)
  4. Cookbooks – great gift for your new daughter-in-law, or adult child just out on their own
  5. Blog, Facebook or Instagram books  (yes, you can import your posts electronically into a book)
  6. Large format coffee-table style books (I love these for travel photography)
  7. Wedding guest books or memory books
  8. eBooks and PDF books too

I’ve made many books through Blurb and the professional quality, excellent color and multitude of  options make it so worthwhile.  I’ve given up scrapbooking and gone exclusively to digital books. I use the downloadable software so I don’t have to be connected to the internet to work on it. Plus it’s fully customizable, depending on your comfort level.  And if you have time to create it in the coming days, you can get a 15% discount if you go through THIS LINK and use the promo code: FALLTHANKS (needs to be in all caps).  But hurry, the offer expires on 11/21/12.  If you’re not able to get things ordered before the 21st, check back here to see if I have a new offer that I can pass along.

6. I Left My Heart In…from In Between Laundry

I left my heart in states pillow

Check out this sweet embroidered pillow that is perfect for a friend or relative who’s across the miles and dearly missed and the light weight makes it easy for shipping too. Of course you could also fill the outlines with fabric to add a bit more punch of color or use fabric paint instead of embroidery.

7. Map Coasters from Martha Stewart

Martha brings us these DIY instructions for these spiffy map coasters.

8. Your Favorite Quote on a Globe from WhipperBerry

Favorite Quote on Globe

Choose your favorite quote and add it to a globe. The one you see here is on a black globe, but the same thing can be done on any color.

9. DIY Travel Trunk Converted to a Rolling Bar from Apartment Therapy

Wouldn’t any guy love this vintage travel trunk converted to a rolling bar?  It fits anywhere!

10. Seven Hour Photo from I Waste So Much Time

7 hour photo

If you’re handy with a camera and a bit of photo software, you can aim the camera at your favorite view and create a photo like this one. Set up the camera on a tripod and click the shutter once every hour for 7 hours, or more to get sunrise and sunset. What a gorgeous poster or canvas this would make in a room!

11. Gallery-wrapped Canvas of Your Favorite Travel Photo

tortoise canvas

I just came across this Groupon offer for up to 65% off a gallery wrapped canvas.  I haven’t used Canvas on Demand before, so I can’t confirm the quality, but I’m assuming that Groupon does some screening of their listings.  Anyway, here’s a link to the deal, but it’s only available for the next 4 days.  I’m assuming there are deadline dates for holiday delivery as well, so be sure to read the small print.

map wrapping paper

Bonus tip!  If you haven’t considered it yet, no matter what gift you give, you can always wrap it in map paper which makes it look awesome and is happy for the recycling world as well!

So, what do you think? Will you try any of these? Do you have other projects that would fit in this post?  If so, add your link in the comments below.
