Did you know that Grand Canyon National Park is celebrating its Centennial this year? The park continues to look amazing even on its 100th Birthday. There are so many awesome events in 2019 that you’ll have a hard time deciding when to go. Check out our downloadable list of events (so far) to find your favorites and save the dates on your calendar.

How the Park Began:

The journey of protecting this amazing natural wonder began in 1882 with a Congressional Bill by then Senator Benjamin Harrison that was unsuccessful. He and others continued to work for protection of these lands for years, but official Federal protection wasn’t achieved until 1893, when it was designated as a Federal Forest Reserve. Finally after more hard work, on February 26, 1919, Congress passed An Act to Establish the Grand Canyon National Park in the State of Arizona.

I hope you’ll agree that we should all be thankful for the many men and women that fought to preserve the magnificent beauty of this one-of-a-kind environment from mining and exploitation over the last 100+ years.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, and often listed as one of the “Seven Wonders of the Natural World”, the Grand Canyon National Park welcomes approximately six million domestic and international visitors each year.

Grand Canyon National Park Centennial Events:

The big 100th birthday celebration begins on Founder’s Day, on February 26th! If you can’t make it then, there are many events throughout the year and even in other parts of the state. You’ll find Naturalization Ceremonies, a Geoscience Symposium, Plein air painting events, Night Sky Astronomy viewings, American Indian Culture Demonstrations, historical figure reenactors, and so much more.

Pete McBride, author of the gorgeous photo book “The Grand Canyon: Between River and Rim” will also be hosting a Photography exhibit on May 19th.

I had no idea it was 100 years old. I visited when I was 13 years old and that was a few decades ago. I loved it then and I would love to return with hubster and share this magical place.
